In 1939 permission was granted to form a Lodge of Instruction and the first meeting was held on a Tuesday at Tavistock Hotel, then followed various venues such as Goat & Compasses, Euston Road, Lords Tavern and Portland Arms in St. Johns Wood, Bayswater and Maida Vale Synagogue, Horse and Groom in Great Portland Street, Rugby Club (Hallam Street), Marlborough Tavern (Blenheim Terrace) and Kingsbury Synagogue.
The first Preceptor of the Lodge of Instruction was W. Bro. Jack Samuel, P.A.G.St.B. assisted by W. Bro. Myer Lawrence, L.G.R., L.G.C.R. and W. Bro. Henry Lever, L.G.R., P.P.G.D., S.L.G.C.R. There followed other dedicated Preceptors: W. Bro. Joseph da Costa, GPurs., P.P.A.G.S., W. Bro. Aubrey Sacks, L.G.R., W. Bro. Marcus Alexander, W. Bro. Lionel Semus, S.L.G.R. assisted by W. Bro. Malcolm Harris, S.L.G.R., L.G.C.R., W. Bro. Gerald Collis, W. Bro. David Bellman, L.G.R., W. Bro. Richard Samuel, P.G.St.B. P.Z. and W. Bro. Michael Crown, L.G.R.
It cannot be too strongly emphasized how much we owe to our preceptors past and present for the time and dedication involved with the Lodge of Instruction. The friendly atmosphere which exists today is a credit to Preceptors past and present as well as the Brethren who are desirous to attain proficiency in the respective offices. Brethren should do their utmost to attend Lodge of Instruction on a Monday night so that the high standards set by the founders will be maintained.
